ZHU Xueying wins gold in women’s trampoline gymnastics
ZHU Xueying reached new heights to win gold in women’s trampoline gymnastics in the People’s Republic of China.
In the highly competitive finals, the 23-year-old put in a series of mind-boggling twists, rebounds and somersaults and finished top of the table with 56,635 points.
The brilliant routine also deprived race favorite, Canadian Rosannagh MacLennan, of her third Olympic gold. The 32-year-old finished just outside the medals in the fourth, 55,460.
The Canadian gymnast was in the bronze medal and waited painfully until former Youth Olympic Champion Zhu, who was the last competitor, completed his routine.
His teammate LIU Lingling, 26, won silver with 56,350 points at Ariake Gym on July 30. The two Chinese athletes eliminated the first and second of 16 fields in the final. This is the first time that a country has won gold and silver in women’s trampoline gymnastics at the Olympics.
The bronze went to Britain’s beloved Bryony Page, 30, who won silver at Rio 2016 with 55,735.
