FLEXpine Surpasses 300 Scoliosis Patients Treated with Its Patented Printing Method

FLEXpine, a rising motion-preservation scoliosis correction brace company, announced today that its patented scoliosis back brace and production method has now been used to treat more than 300 young patients diagnosed with scoliosis.

FLEXpine’s production method enables patients to exercise actively, whereas conventional back braces are so rigid that patients cannot move freely. Comfortable fit is one of FLEXpine’s advantages. The rehabilitation period for patients using a FLEXpine brace is shorter than that of patients who use a traditional rigid back brace. Since patients can exercise with a FLEXpine brace, they can strengthen their back muscles and learn to maintain their posture even when they are not wearing the brace. The FLEXpine brace internally holds the spine stable.

Until now, 3D printing materials with weak hardness and strength characteristics were difficult to commercialize due to external impact. However, the FLEXpine’s patented 3D printing method protects patients from external shock.

Unlike rigid braces, which take more than two weeks to make, the personalized FLEXpine brace procedure, including taking x-ray images and body measurements, takes about 10 days. The FLEXpine brace allows for non–face-to-face production and additional follow-up services, so patients’ can continue with their normal daily activities since spine flexibility and mobility are retained.

Until now, brace treatment options have been limited to rigid-type and band-type. However, the FLEXpine hybrid-type brace combines the advantages of rigid-type and band-type braces and gives patients more choice.

At 1mm thick, the FLEXpine brace is lightweight and slim enough to wear under a shirt, and it is well ventilated. These innovations impact patients’ willingness to wear the brace, and patients are less likely to give up on brace treatment.

About 3.2 billion people worldwide have scoliosis with a Cobbs’ angle of 20 degrees or higher. FLEXpine targets patients with a Cob’s angle of between 10 and 40 degrees, accounting for 40% of all scoliosis patients.

FLEXpine is now researching sensors that can detect how long a user wears the device and monitors pressure points to ensure fit and function. A mobile app collects the data for use by patients to manage the back brace. It is also planning to accelerate its entry into the U.S. brace market by obtaining approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and HCPCS (Health Care Product Code for Supplies code).
